This report analyses the nexus between the protection of civilians and the environment in humanitarian operations. The study focused on examining the type of harms that come out of this nexus, as well as reviewing best guidance and practices existing in the field. Finally, it underlines how the protection sector can effectively protect the environment during humanitarian operations. It sets out recommendations focusing on mainstreaming the environment in operational planning, addressing environmental vulnerability and resilience of conflict-affected communities, and strengthening and adapting existing frameworks. This research was commissioned by the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit and was carried out by postgraduate students at The London School of Economics and Political Science.
