Environment and Emergencies Training (EET) – Slovenia

From 16 to 21 September 2017, Slovenia received an edition of the Environment and Emergencies Training (EET), organized jointly by the United Nations, the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), and the Slovenian Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief, with financial support of ECHO.

The UN Environment / Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Joint Unit acted as main facilitator during the course. For six days, the 23 participants gained skills to deploy as environmental experts on disaster response missions. It brought together professionals from the Union Civil Protection Mechanism participating states, the UN Disaster Assessment and Coordination mechanism as well as Joint Unit response partners. The training sessions covered topics such as the role of an environmental expert during early emergencies, disaster waste management and the Flash Environmental Assessment Tool, to communication and remote sensing.

The training, facilitated by Slovenia, also included simulation exercises which recreated challenges encountered by environmental experts. The simulations included practical work at industrial sites and an emergency camp. The training was the first out of four trainings supported by ECHO and held in Slovenia. The one was held in October 2018.
