This workshop hosted by the UNEP/OCHA Joint Unit and MSB called for greater action regarding disaster waste management.
Disaster waste presents a major impediment to rescue operations and the delivery of humanitarian aid. It poses a risk not only to the health and safety of humans, but also to the natural environment and livelihood recovery. Recognizing these challenges, a group of environmental experts and professionals met in Geneva in November 2016 to examine opportunities for better coordination of disaster waste management. Co-organized by the UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit, at the initiative of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency and the United Nations Development Programme, the workshop witnessed a total of 24 participants from a broad range of organizations coming together to share experiences and identify opportunities for improvement.
