The International Maritime Organization (IMO)

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is the United Nations specialized agency in charge of ensuring the safety of shipping and the prevention of marine/atmospheric pollution by ships.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted over 50 international conventions addressing various marine issues, several of which contain measures to prevent, prepare  and respond to maritime accidents.

Some of the IMO Conventions are relevant to emergency response to marine pollution incidents, particularly the 1990 International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC Convention), and the 2000 Protocol on Preparedness, Response and Co-operation to Pollution Incidents by Hazardous and Noxious Substances (OPRC-HNS Protocol).
