This factsheet describes the supporting role the UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU) plays in disaster waste management activities.
Disasters can generate large quantities of waste, which become a threat to health, safety and the environment. They can also hinder humanitarian efforts by blocking access to affected populations.
The UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU) supports Member States and international and regional organizations in addressing disaster waste through a broad range of services, guidance materials and tools. The Unit mainly does this through the emergency deployments of disaster waste managers and by providing guidance material on disaster waste management.
