This mission report describes the environmental assessment conducted by experts deployed by the UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit following an oil spill in Karachi.
The JEU, in close cooperation with UN Environment’s Disaster Management Branch, conducted an assessment mission to Pakistan in connection with a large-scale oil spill in the Port of Karachi. The mission assessed environmental impacts of the disaster and provided direct technical guidance to the national authorities and responders.
Recommendations were made to the Pakistani authorities on short and long-term actions and a restoration framework was proposed to contribute to a healthy, productive, and biologically diverse ecosystem.
